UniCarbo was present at the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28), held at Expo City, in Dubai.
In 2022, UniCarbo also participated in COP 27, which took place in Egypt from November 6th to 18th.
This year, among the various topics to be negotiated in attempts to combat climate change and limit global warming, the expectation is that new advances will be made in relation to article A6.4 of the Paris Agreement, which deals with the new regulated carbon market.
COP28 , held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in 2023, was a significant milestone in global climate negotiations. The Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change brought together world leaders, negotiators, scientists and activists to discuss the actions needed to address the climate crisis.
Main points of COP28:
- First Global Stocktake: One of the highlights of COP28 was the conclusion of the first Global Stocktake, which assessed collective progress towards the goals set out in the Paris Agreement. The final report of the Global Stocktake highlighted the urgent need to accelerate climate action to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
- Loss and Damage Fund: After years of negotiations, countries have finally reached an agreement to establish a fund to help developing countries deal with the losses and damage caused by the impacts of climate change.
- Energy transition: COP28 highlighted the importance of transitioning to clean, renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. There was a strong focus on the need to phase out fossil fuels and accelerate the development of clean technologies.
- Inclusion and participation: The conference also focused on promoting inclusion and participation of diverse groups, including indigenous peoples, women and youth.
Results and challenges:
COP28 brought important progress, but also highlighted the challenges that persist in the fight against climate change. Among the main results, we can highlight:
- More ambitious commitments: Several countries have announced new commitments to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy.
- Scaling up climate finance: Significant progress has been made in discussions on climate finance, with developed countries committing to increase their resources to help developing countries address climate challenges.
- Focus on adaptation: The conference recognized the importance of adaptation to climate change and highlighted the need to increase investment in measures to protect vulnerable communities.
